Parent Programs

Positive Discipline Workshop with Anita Morales:

The purpose of this 8-week series is to provide parents the tools to strengthen family ties and provide the tools to learn positive discipline tools. We are partnering with Anita Garcia Morales who has worked on providing these workshops for families for over 20 years. Parents will be able to receive hours towards a parent certificate at the end of the series and can also receive a letter to a judge if needed.  The series includes concepts about setting Appropriate Limits, Communicating with teens, Conflicts between siblings, solutions and tools, discipline instead of punishments. The target for this series is parents interested in learning positive discipline skills and parents searching for general support in a community of Spanish speaking parents

Guiding Good Choices

Guiding Good Choices (GGC) is a family competency training program for parents of children in middle school that gives parents the skills needed to reduce their children’s risk for using alcohol and other drugs. The program contains five-sessions, with an average session length of 2 hours each week. Children are required to attend one session that teaches peer resistance skills. The other four sessions are solely for parents and include instruction on: (a) identification of risk factors for adolescent substance abuse and a strategy to enhance protective family processes; (b) development of effective parenting practices, particularly regarding substance use issues; (c) family conflict management; and (d) use of family meetings as a vehicle for improving family management and positive child involvement.

Youth Programs

Community Garden Project:

The Shark Garden at New Start High School is accepting art submissions from local youth and community members for the garden fence. Art will be related to gardening, gardens, produce, flowers, nature, wildlife of Puget Sound &, etc. The goal of the Community Art Project is to place a permanent art installation on the New Start Community Garden fence at the New Start High School in Burien that features garden-related art and reflects the culture of the school and the surrounding communities. Art must be the artist's original artwork. Youth may submit 1 or 2 original works. Art must be submitted by May 1st, 2021 by email at Mjauregui@psesd.org OR Burien Arts Website TBA. Leaders of Change Club at Evergreen High School:

Our prevention club has been in existence for five years and is facilitated by our student assistant program. Students choose projects they are excited about related to their strengths and do community service. 

Art and Social Justice Group:

Beginning during the Fall of 2021 the group is facilitated by our student assistant professional and a volunteer to bring art activities to youth in both middle school and high school. The group focuses on teaching students about identity, diversity, intersectionality, leaders of social movements, and art skills(watercolor, collage, painting, drawing)

Life Skills Program at Cascade Middle School:

LifeSkills Training (LST) is a school-based classroom intervention to reduce the risks of alcohol, tobacco, drug abuse, and violence by targeting social and psychological factors associated with the initiation of risky behaviors. Our student assistant works with middle/junior high school students to deliver a set of presentations focusing on social-emotional development, identifying emotions, and social skills related to avoiding substance use.
